Major Cuts in Operational Emissions

Kingfisher Group, the global home improvement retailer behind B&Q, Screwfix, Castorama, and Brico Dépôt, has achieved significant reductions in its carbon footprint. According to the company’s 2024/25 Annual Report, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, those generated directly by operations and purchased energy, have been cut by 66% since 2016, far ahead of its science-based target of 37.8% by 2025.

The company has upgraded nearly 900 stores with air-source heat pumps to electrify heating and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Energy-efficient lighting, improved heating and cooling systems, and advanced energy management systems have further optimised electricity use. Roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels now generate over 12.5 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to power thousands of homes and offset a significant portion of store energy consumption.

Tackling Supply Chain Emissions

Scope 3 emissions, which include upstream activities such as supplier operations and the lifecycle of products, represent a much larger portion of Kingfisher’s total footprint. Since the 2017/18 financial year, the company has reduced absolute Scope 3 emissions by 30.4% and achieved a 38.7% reduction in emissions intensity. These reductions are the result of sustainable sourcing policies, supplier engagement programmes, and environmentally friendly product design.

Sustainable Products and Materials

Kingfisher’s commitment to sustainability extends to its product range. Over 53% of group sales and 63% of exclusive brand sales now come from products designed with environmental considerations. This includes items made from responsibly sourced materials or products that help customers live more sustainably at home. The company also reports that 98% of all wood and paper used is certified as sustainably sourced.

The Sustainable Home Products programme is supported by a long-term partnership with Bioregional, which provides expert guidance and validation for sustainability claims. This ensures that every product meets robust environmental standards while remaining practical and accessible to consumers.

Embedding Sustainability into Business Growth

Kingfisher demonstrates that ambitious decarbonisation can coexist with strong business performance. Despite many retail properties being leased rather than owned, the company has implemented energy-saving measures, electrified heating, installed solar panels, and introduced cleaner fuels for vehicles across its network. By integrating sustainability into core operations, Kingfisher shows that emissions reduction can be both strategic and operational.

By combining operational efficiency, renewable energy, supply chain engagement, and sustainable product design, Kingfisher sets a benchmark for responsible retail. The company demonstrates that large organisations can deliver significant environmental impact while continuing to grow and provide value to customers.
